Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

Donna and Russ Hinman members of the Heart Exchange Support Group, Inc. witness a symbolic 'Donor Card' for Astros' own Wesley Wright.

The Heart Exchange hosted its annual Houston Astros "Donor Awareness" baseball game event on Saturday, June 7, 2008.  Our Houston Astros tried to defeat the Cardinals, but fell short!

Heart recipient Charles Liszcz was honored with throwing out the first pitch in the pre-game ceremonies, and recipient Russ Hinman and his wife, Donna, witnessed a symbolic "Donor Card" signing by Wesley Wright of the Houston Astros.

Each Year the Heart Exchange promotes donor awareness through sporting events.  With each ticket purchased, a free T-Shirt is provided to wear to the event.  It is hoped that ticket holders will continue to wear the shirt as a reminder to become an organ donor.  There are 99,000 people on a transplant waiting list, waiting for a second chance at life.  Daily, more than 17 people on the list die, still waiting, and, daily, just as many are added to the list.

Please consider becoming an Organ Donor and sign up at www.donatelifetexas.org.  Remember to discuss your wishes with your family!

Look for the Houston Aeros "Donor Awareness" hockey game, and come out and support the Heart Exchange and its efforts to promote awareness in the community.

Heart Exchange meets each Wednesday on the 12th floor, yellow elevators, at 10:00 a.m.  A social is held the second Saturday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Cooley Auditorium.

HOUSTON AEROS' DONOR NIGHT 2008

Tom Griggs, Rebecca Butler, and Clint Pettijohn presented a $20,000 check to Dr. Cohn for research to cure heart disease.

On February 21st The Heart Exchange hosted its 11th annual Organ Donor Night at the Houston Aero’s.  Dr. William Cohn, cardiovascular surgeon and Director of Minimally Invasive Surgical Technology at the Texas Heart Institute was honored with the “Face off” puck drop.

During the intermission, recipients Rebecca Butler and Tom Griggs along with Aeros rep. Clint Pettijohn presented Dr. Cohn a $20,000 check for research to cure heart disease. The Heart Exchange raised this money from their annual golf tournament.   Rebecca and Tom were lucky, they rec’d lifesaving transplants…..over 108,000 are awaiting organ transplants and due to a scarcity of donors, as estimated 1/3 of those waiting will die before receiving a transplant.

Texas Heart Institute is dedicated to reducing the devastating toll of cardiovascular disease through innovative programs in research and education and patient care.

Special thanks to Roy Ballard, Jim & Violet Brabham, Phyllis Evetts, Russ & Donna Hinman, Wayne Holder, Charles Liszcz and Leon Storemski who took time from game to share their personal experiences encouraging 32 potential organ donors to sign the donor registry….kudos to you all!
