The Heart Exchange hosted its annual Houston Astros "Donor Awareness" baseball game event on Saturday, June 7, 2008. Our Houston Astros tried to defeat the Cardinals, but fell short!
Heart recipient Charles Liszcz was honored with throwing out the first pitch in the pre-game ceremonies, and recipient Russ Hinman and his wife, Donna, witnessed a symbolic "Donor Card" signing by Wesley Wright of the Houston Astros.
Each Year the Heart Exchange promotes donor awareness through sporting events. With each ticket purchased, a free T-Shirt is provided to wear to the event. It is hoped that ticket holders will continue to wear the shirt as a reminder to become an organ donor. There are 99,000 people on a transplant waiting list, waiting for a second chance at life. Daily, more than 17 people on the list die, still waiting, and, daily, just as many are added to the list.
Please consider becoming an Organ Donor and sign up at www.donatelifetexas.org. Remember to discuss your wishes with your family!
Look for the Houston Aeros "Donor Awareness" hockey game, and come out and support the Heart Exchange and its efforts to promote awareness in the community.
Heart Exchange meets each Wednesday on the 12th floor, yellow elevators, at 10:00 a.m. A social is held the second Saturday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Cooley Auditorium.
